Flavin containing monooxygenases

By Fredrik Pettersson

FMO is short for Flavin containing monooxygenases and are a group of enzymes present in numerous organs in the body. They are a part of the bodys way to metabolize for example drugs and xenobiotics. The FMO:s have 5 distinct isoforms FMO1-FMO5 and different isoforms are expressed differently across organs and species. The FMO:s are a separate class of enzymes than the more known cythochrome P450 (CYP).
