Can rage be a positive feeling?
By Fredrik Pettersson
When everything goes wrong and you feel completely filled with anger, you can exploit that energy to do something creative. The feeling itself creates loads of energy as adrenaline floods your brain giving rise to an elevation in blood pressure and perception. In this state you are on the edge and if canalized properly this can be to your advantage. The problem is of course that when you are angry the energy you feel is often used in a destructive manner. So the challenge is to produce something useful of your rage. Breaking stuff is the first thing that comes to mind in constructive work. Have you got some demolition to do then this is perfect way to canalize your rage. If no such work is present then anything involving using body strength in a work that does not require being cautious in any way, for example moving heavy (but not breakable) objects, cutting down trees and chopping wood, digging a big hole in your backyard or just go to gym and pump iron for an hour. But besides these obvious ways of using the energy caused by rage, you can use it in a more creative manner. Individual yes, but most people are capable of creating under the influence of rage. As it is such a powerful feeling, it will manifest itself in whatever you do in a raw and unveiled way. Paint a painting, create a song or write a poem with the driving force of pure and undefined anger, let it pulse through you as you create. And besides the fact that you are actually doing something with this usually so destructive feeling, you get to enjoy the complete calm that (almost always) follows, it is so much better than going around for hours feeling irritated and frustrated. I hope these few lines can help you next time you get angry, it sure helped me to write this...
